IP TAKE: This funder has very broad interests but sticks with Los Angeles County for most of its funding. However, the rest of Southern California should get to know this funder better as well.

Borchard does not accept unsolicited proposals or requests for funding, and only accepts application by invitation only. It does provide a way for grantseekers to get in touch, so there may be some opportunities for introductions there. Beyond this, look for ways to network.

PROFILE: The Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation was incorporated in 1978 and makes grants in Los Angeles Country. It seeks to “promote research, education, social justice, and the arts and to improve the human condition.” This is a private, independent funder established by Albert Borchard, a Los Angeles trucking, warehouse, and real estate businessman, and his wife, Elaine. The couple, who were big supporters of Southern California universities, died in an automobile accident in 1983. During their lifetimes, they were also supporters of local causes for the arts, social justice, and to improve the human condition. The Borchard Foundation has five priority areas and also award grants to the educational and research programs in its two centers. Grantmaking prioritizes youth development, health and medicine, education, the arts, the environment.

The foundation pursues a sixth area of interest, alleviation of poverty, through long-term partnerships with several existing organizations. No additional grant applications are being accepted for this topic.

The foundation also created an International Education Center in 1987 and a Law and Aging Center in 1998. The education center was designed to create a bridge between the U.S. and France to further cultural, academic, and public affairs. The Center on Law and Aging aims to improve the quality of life for elderly people with socioeconomic barriers. These two centers have their own websites and application process.
