PROFILE:  Founded in 1998, the Ronald W. Burkle Foundation was established by billionaire businessman Ron Burkle. It seeks to “positively influence people around the world and their communities.” Ron Burkle founded investment firm Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and is widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in the retail, manufacturing and distribution industries. Back east, Burkle is also co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Burkle serves co-chair of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and on such boards as AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). The Ronald W. Grants for Los Angeles and SoCal

The foundation prefers a broad grantmaking strategy, which supports a variety of interests. It currently invests in international relations, worker's rights, at-risk communities, arts & architecture, education & youth, scientific research.

Past grantees include the Claremont Graduate Schools, LA Philharmonic, LAANE – Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic, Los Angeles Urban League, and Dream Yard LA.

Important Grant Details

Grants range from $5,000 to $350,000 to Friends of Pilgrim School. In a recent year, Burkle's foundation gave away around $2 million. Grant seekers should begin by submitting a letter of inquiry. All letters are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
