PROFILE: Founded in 1993, the Lindemann Charitable Foundation II. was established by billionaire couple George and Frayda Lindemann. The son of a cosmetics mogul, George L. Lindemann built and solid several companies including Vision Cable and Metro Mobile CTS. Away from media, he also purchased Southern Union, a natural gas pipeline company. Lindemann and Frayda, a former assistant professor of music history, are based in Palm Beach, Florida. Lindemann Charitable Foundation II.’s grantmaking prioritizes opera institutions.

According to tax filings, the foundaiton's grantmaking centers on supporting opera, its institutions, and artist development. Frayda serves as vice president on the Metropolitan Opera’s board and past chair of OPERA America, .

Beyond music, the Lindemann family is also interested in contemporary art. They’ve supported places like The Bass, where son George Jr., an art collector, serves as president. Another son, Adam Lindemann, is a prominent contemporary art collector.

Grants range from $500 to $603,000 to The Metropolitan Opera Guild. The family strongly supports The Met Opera, home to the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. The foundation has also funded Glimmerglass Opera, Gotham Chamber Opera, Miami City Ballet, and Palm Beach Opera. 

The foundation keeps a low profile, making it tough to get a handle on exactly what the Lindemanns look for in their music grantees. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.3 million. Given its lack of transparency, it is unclear whether the foundation accepts unsolicited applications.
