OVERVIEW: The David Geffen Foundation supports a wide range of girls and women’s organizations across the United States.
IP TAKE: Geffen typically awards unrestricted general operating support grants rather than project-specific grants.
PROFILE: Founded by music executive and film producer David Geffen in 1986, the David Geffen Foundation maintains a low public profile, does not operate a website, and does not employ a formal staff. According to tax filings, its grantmaking supports people affected by HIV/AIDS, civil liberties, the arts, Jewish causes, and health care.
While the Geffen Foundation does not list girls and women’s causes as a grantmaking priority, its latest tax filings indicate a funding interest in this space. Girls and women’s organizations that have received grants from Geffen in the past include the Feminist Majority Foundation and the Women’s Media Center. Grant amounts can range anywhere from $1,000 to $15 million. Most awards, however, fall in the $5,000 to $50,000 range.
The Geffen Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
