Marineau Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Marineau Family Foundation awards grants to programs helping girls and women live economically secure lives. It also funds projects working toward violence prevention and educational success. It awards grants to organizations that work in San Francisco, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

IP TAKE: This funder supports organizations that involve the communities in which they serve in the planning process and conduct direct service work. It also seeks organizations addressing the root causes of violence for long-term solutions rather than short-term remedies. This can be a crowded giving space, since this funder likes to collaborate with its grantees and provide grants for one to three years. It’s reasonably responsive, so contact them with general questions if needed.

PROFILE: Established in 2006, the Marineau Family Foundation “funds projects and programs that open pathways for all, especially women and their children, through education, violence prevention, and opportunities for further economic self-sufficiency.” Susan Marineau is a 2022 National Opera Trustee Recognition Awards recipient. The foundation’s grants support a variety of organizations, though these should be based in San Francisco, Chicago, or Santa Fe, or benefit groups in those cities.

Grants for Violence Prevention

Marineau’s grants support gun violence prevention organizations that focus on skills development; collaborations among like-minded institutions; those that involve girls and women in their planning and implementation phases; those that exhibit effective leadership and demonstrate strong planning and process development. Programs that benefit economically disadvantaged people and violence prevention programs are grantmaking priorities for this funder.

The University of San Francisco (USF) is a past violence prevention grantee. USF received a grant for its Think About it Campaign, an alcohol and violence prevention program taking place at college campuses around the country. Grants for Women and Girls

The foundation invests in skills development, like-minded collaborations, and those that involve girls and women in their planning and implementation phases. It believes “women and children, especially girls, are at the heart of positive social change,” and that “[f]amilies, communities and societies are all improved when women and girls thrive.”

Past grantees include the Women’s Foundation in support of its Women’s Policy Institute program and the University of San Francisco for four partial scholarships for young women graduates of Cristo Rey High School. To learn more about select Marineau grantees, explore its grants partners page.

Grants for K-12 and Arts Education

The foundation views education as “the key to social mobility and economic self-sufficiency.” It supports both secondary education and arts education. It only awards scholarships on a partial basis and does not award full scholarships. It also funds the Opera Grants for Female Stage Directors and Conductors program from Opera America.

Marineau has supported Georgetown University, for “innovative summer education programs for high potential high school students from all over the country who have educational gaps as well as cultural gaps due to economic background.” Other past grantees include UC San Francisco, New Mexico School for the Arts, Immaculate Conception Academy, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music, for performing arts education.

Important Grant Details:

Foundation grants require “an outcome orientation” and require that grantseekers “describe what success will look like and measure their results against that description.” Marineau only funds 501(c)(3) organizations, and prioritizes “programs and projects where the aim is to help people help themselves.” Grants are for one to three years and range from $10,000 to $100,000.

The foundation prioritizes organizations in San Francisco, Chicago, and Santa Fe. The Marineau Family Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant proposals.
