SOURCE OF WEALTH: Retired NBA basketball player

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health

OVERVIEW:  Alonzo and Tracy Mourning conduct philanthropy through the Mourning Family Foundation, which focuses on youth development through advocacy, education and enrichment. MFF focuses on the South Florida community.

BACKGROUND: Alonzo Mourning graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in sociology. He was the second overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, and he spent three seasons with the team before being traded to the Heat. A seven-time NBA All-Star, he won a championship in 2006 with Dwyane Wade and Shaq.

Born in Cincinnati, Tracy Wilson Mourning graduated from Howard University. She is a mentor, designer, broadcast journalist, and motivational speaker. She launched Honey Child, her lifestyle brand, and Myka and Me, a natural hair and body product line inspired by her daughter.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Mournings launched the Mourning Family Foundation (MFF) in 1997. Since that time, MFF has served thousands of children and their families by raising over $25 million to support various youth development programs, including the Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine programs. In 2002, Tracy founded the Honey Shine Mentoring Program to make a difference in the lives of young girls.

The Mourning Family Foundation Educational Scholarship Fund identifies graduating high school seniors throughout South Florida to receive 4-year scholarships to assist with academic expenses, as they pursue an undergraduate degree at an institution of higher learning. MFF also runs an antipoverty initiative in Miami-Dade county.

HEALTH: Shortly after the 2000 Olympic Games, Mourning was diagnosed with focal glomerulosclerosis, a disease that affects the filtering process of the kidneys. He later received a kidney transplant at Columbia University Medical Center and had a successful NBA comeback. In the past, Mourning supported Columbia.

MFF also promotes health and wellness initiatives.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Mournings to remain laser-focused on their South Florida community.
