Greg and Sharon Maffei

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Liberty Media, Oracle; media and technology executive

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health, Denver Community

OVERVIEW: Greg Maffei and family conduct their philanthropy through the Maffei Foundation, which funded around $1.4 million in grants in a past year. The family supports their schools and other educational organizations, often in Denver. Other broad interests include health.

BACKGROUND: Greg Maffei graduated with an A.B. from Dartmouth College and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. Maffei served as Co-President of Oracle, Chairman and CEO of 360networks, and CFO of Microsoft. He oversees the Liberty family of companies. Liberty Media owns media and entertainment businesses, including subsidiaries Formula 1, SiriusXM, the Atlanta Braves, TripAdvisor, and an interest in Live Nation Entertainment.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Maffei supports his alma maters Dartmouth College and Harvard. Maffei's wife Sharon graduated from USC Marshall School of Business, which the family also supports. Education grantmaking appears to focus on K-12 education, including scholarships. Grantees include Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Colorado Academy, Groton Schools, and ACE Scholarships, which raises money for low-income youth in states including Colorado and Texas.

HEALTH: Grantees include Susan G. Komen, Michael Phelps Foundation, JRDF, Children's Hospital Colorado, National Jewish Health, and Rocky Mountain Hyperbaric Association for Brain Injuries.

DENVER COMMUNITY: Much of the family foundation’s grantmaking focuses on the Denver area. Other grantees include Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Catholic Foundation of Northern Colorado, Jewish Family Services, and Denver Rescue Mission.

LOOKING FORWARD: Maffei is only in his 60s and very much engaged in business. Perhaps the family's philanthropy will deepen down the line.
