Michael Leeds

SOURCE OF WEALTH: CMP Media

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health

OVERVIEW: Michael Leeds and family give through the Andrea and Michael Leeds Foundation. Though a big gift went to his alma mater University of Colorado, grantmaking has been modest recently.

BACKGROUND: Born in New York, Michael Leeds graduated from University of Colorado with a BBA in 1974. He helped build his parents’ small New York company, CMP Media, into a publishing juggernaut.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: Leeds and his extended family gave a $35 million gift to University of Colorado at Boulder College of Business to endow the CU-Boulder business school. Michael’s brother Richard also attended the school.

OTHER: Leeds is a trustee of Northwell Health, New York state’s largest healthcare provider, which the family supports via their foundation. Other grantees have included North Shore Child & Family Guidance, and Mount Sinai Hospital.

LOOKING FORWARD: It is unclear if Leeds family giving through their foundation will ramp up. Leeds has an interest in flying and the outdoors, which may come into play in his philanthropy down the line.
