OVERVIEW: Philip Rosenthal, his wife Monica, and family do their grantmaking through the Rosenthal Family Foundation, which gave away around $2.6 million in a recent year. The couple's adoptive home of Los Angeles, and to a lesser extent New York City (where Rosenthal was born) and Philadelphia (where Monica was born) are funding priorities. The Rosenthals support the arts and education through their foundation. He starred in the food and travel documentaries I'll Have What Phil's Having on PBS and Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix.

BACKGROUND: Philip Rosenthal was born into a Jewish family in Queens, New York, and grew up in Rockland County, NY. He graduated from Hofstra with a degree in theater studies in 1981. He acted in the early 1980s, and later shifted to writing and producing. Rosenthal's longest-running project was the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Rosenthal and Monica support their mutual alma mater, Hofstra University. Other philanthropy takes place in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Grantees include Big Brothers Big Sisters of LA, Homeboy Industries, UCLA Foundation, Oakwood School, City Year, and The Students First Foundation.

ARTS & CULTURE: The family supports arts organizations via their foundation, including theaters and arts education organizations. Grantees included Inner City Arts, Ford Theatres, LA Philharmonic, Young Storytellers Foundation, Versa Style Dance Forum, Zimmer Children's Museum, and Upper Darby Arts Education Foundation. (Monica was born in Darby, Pennsylvania.)

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees include Temple Israel of Hollywood and Chabad of Greater Los Feliz. 

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The family has supported David Lynch Foundation and Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.

OTHER: Rosenthal and Monica have given at least $1 million to the Obama Foundation.
