Ben Moss III

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Bow Tie Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Arts & Culture

OVERVIEW: Ben Moss and his family move their philanthropy through the Moss Family Foundation, which gave away around $412,000 in a recent year. The Mosses particularly focus on health and medical research through their foundation. Another interest is the arts.

BACKGROUND: Charles Benjamin Moss III graduated from University of Chicago. He worked in the broadcasting and publishing industries in Colorado and New York. In 1998, Moss and his father, Charley, formed Bow Tie Partners, a real estate development and entertainment company with principal offices in Manhattan. Ben is the grandson of Charles B. Moss Sr., a radio and television producer and movie theater owner, who helped grow his family business of theaters into the largest independently owned and operated motion picture theater circuit in Metro New York.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: Moss’ wife Ellen-Jane is on the board of End Allergies Together and has an interest in integrative nutrition. The family also has strong ties to Mount Sinai, where Moss was born and has directed steady sums to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Weill Cornell Medical College. Other grantees have included Hospital for Special Surgery, Mount Sinai Health System, and New York Presbyterian Fund.

ARTS & CULTURE: Moss’ mother Robin is the chair of Moose Foundation of the Arts in London and appears to guide some of the family’s interest in this area. Grantees have included Newberger Museum of Art, American Film Institute, and American Friends of the Toronto International Film Festival. The Moss family also has ties to Canada.

OTHER: Family members are also interested in education and Ellen-Jane is on the board of trustees of Storefront Academy in Harlem. Robin was also once a teacher at Dalton. Additionally, the family has supported Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Safe Haven for Cats.

LOOKING FORWARD: Several generations of Mosses guide the family’s giving. Ben will likely fully take the reins of the family business and should be watched carefully in the coming years, along with Ellen-Jane. Beyond New York City, the Mosses have ties to Montreal, Apsen, and North Carolina, future sites of potentially significant philanthropy.
