OVERVIEW: Alan Horn and his wife Cindy do their grantmaking through the Horn Foundation. Along with Norman and Lyn Lear, the Horns co-founded the Environmental Media Association. Horn is a vice chair of the board of trustees of the National Resources Defense Council. He supports the environment, education, and the arts.
BACKGROUND: Alan Horn graduated from Union College and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. In 1987, Horn cofounded Castle Rock Entertainment, where as chairman and CEO, he oversaw films and television shows such as A Few Good Men, The Shawshank Redemption,The Green Mile, When Harry Met Sally, City Slickers, In the Line of Fire, and Seinfeld. Horn has also served as president and COO of Warner Bros. Entertainment. He is currently chief creative officer of Walt Disney Studios.
ISSUES:
ENVIRONMENT: Cindy and Alan Horn along with Norman and Lyn Lear co-founded Environmental Media Association (EMA), "a nonprofit created to inspire and coordinate an entertainment industry response to the global environmental crisis." The couple continues to support EMA via their foundation, as well as organizations like Heal the Bay (Cindy is a founding trustee); NRDC; Climate Reality Project, a "nonprofit involved in education and advocacy related to climate change"; Oceana; and WildAid, which seeks to "end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. A component of this philanthropy supports Montana and other intermountain Western states, with recent support going to Montana Land Reliance.
EDUCATION: Horn steadily supports his alma mater, Union College. Other grantees include Duke University, Harvard Business School, Stanford, and UCLA Foundation. Cindy was involved in helping develop the UCLA Global Bio Lab. On the K-12 front, the Horns have supported Archer School for Girls, Harvard Westlake School, and Bright Prospect, which seeks to "empower high potential, low-income students to gain admission, succeed and graduate from four-year colleges and universities."
ARTS & CULTURE: The Horns have supported organizations such as Geffen Playhouse, Sundance Institute, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, LACMA, Motion Picture Television Fund, and American Film Institute. Again in Montana, Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts has been supported.
OTHER: Horn has supported People for the American Way, a nonprofit "designed to speak out for Bill of Rights guarantees and to monitor violations of constitutional freedoms." The organization was founded by Norman Lear. Other grantees include media organizations like Media Matters and women's organizations like Girls Inc.
LOOKING FORWARD: Horn is in his late-70s and has been active in philanthropy for years, all the while juggling his career in entertainment. Expect the family's steady giving to continue.
