Tom and Barbara Dooley

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Viacom

FUNDING AREAS: Health & Human Services, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Tom Dooley and family move their philanthropy through the Dooley Family Foundation, which gave away around $172,500 in a recent year. Annual grantmaking out of the foundation has been modest. Health appears to be a top interest.

BACKGROUND: Tom Dooley graduated with a bachelor's degree from St. John’s University and received an MBA from New York University. Dooley joined Viacom in 1980 and became COO in 2010. He was also interim president and CEO of Viacom in 2016. He keeps a low profile.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: The Dooleys have supported East End Hospice, Make a Wish Foundation, and Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Northwell Health's principal medical research facility, home to the Barbara and Thomas Dooley Scientific Achievement Award. Dooley is a trustee of Northwell Health. The family has directed funds to Dana’s Angels Research Trust, which works for a cure for Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC), a genetic metabolic disorder in which harmful quantities of cholesterol and other fatty substances accumulate in the cells of the body.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Literacy Inc. and Tulane University.

OTHER: Funds go to assorted other organizations, particularly in Long Island, including Long Island Children’s Museum, The Waterfront Center, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral Foundation, which received a particularly large grant a few years ago.

LOOKING FORWARD: Dooley is only in his 60s and still engaged in business. Perhaps more funds will move out of the young foundation in the coming years.
