Marc and Jane Nathanson

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Mapleton Investments, Falcon Cable TV

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Policy, Health, Arts & Culture

OVERVIEW: Marc and Jane Nathanson move philanthropy through the Jane and Marc Nathanson Foundation, though the vehicle appears to have been depleted of assets for quite some time. The couple have a few key interests, including policy, and health.

BACKGROUND: Marc Nathanson graduated from University of Denver and UCSB. He founded and was CEO of Falcon Cable TV, one of the largest multiple cable system operators in the United States. He sold Falcon to Charter Communications for $3.7 billion and became vice chairman of Charter. Today, he is chairman of Mapleton Investments, a diversified investment holding company; and Falcon Waterfree Technologies, which is the largest waterfree urinal manufacturer and distributer in the world. Nathanson has been on the Forbes billionaire list in the past.

A New York native, Jane Nathanson graduated with a B.A. in art from University of Denver and a master's in marriage and family counseling from the California Graduate Institute.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & POLICY: The couple have strongly supported their mutual alma mater University of Denver, home to the Marc Nathanson Fellowship, awarded to a second-year M.A. student at the Korbel School of International Studies. Jane was a delegate to the 1984 Democratic Convention and the couple have been active in political affairs and chaired major fundraising events for the Democratic Party for years. Nathanson is on the board of the Aspen Institute, which the couple strongly supports, and co-chairs the board of directors of Pacific Council on International Policy.

PUBLIC HEALTH: The couple endowed the Nathanson Family Resilience Center at UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, which is a resource and educational center for families dealing with mental illness.

ARTS & CULTURE: Jane is a founder and trustee of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles. She is also a trustee of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the founder of the Aspen Art Museum’s Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence Program.

LOOKING FORWARD: It’s unclear if giving will ramp up through the family’s foundation again, but expect giving in Los Angeles and Aspen in particular to continue.
