Carole Bayer Sager and Bob Daly

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Singer-Songwriter

FUNDING AREAS: Arts & Culture, Los Angeles Community, Youth

OVERVIEW: Carole Bayer Sager does her grantmaking through the CBS Charitable Foundation, formerly the Bellagio Foundation, which has made very small grants annually of late. Sager and husband Bob Daly, a longtime entertainment industry senior executive, also support organizations via the Robert and Carole Daly Foundation. Los Angeles is an important site of philanthropy.

BACKGROUND: Born in New York, Carole Bayer Sager began her songwriting career while still a high school student and wrote her first No. 1 hit, "A Groovy Kind of Love," for the English group the Mindbenders in 1966. She wrote such hits as “That’s What Friends Are For” with Burt Bacharach; she is an Academy Award and Grammy-winning artist.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: In recent years, the CBS Charitable Foundation, formerly the Bellagio Foundation, has given $5,000 annually to a sole grantee – the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Sager, though, is on the board of LACMA, which she steadily supports. Via the Robert and Carole Daly Foundation, Sager and Daly support the Geffen Playhouse and the Motion Picture & Television Fund

LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY: Sager and Daly underwrote the first two years of the Los Angeles operation of DonorsChoose.org, which allows teachers to post the projects for which they need funding and donors to choose the classroom plan that they want to fund. Sager solicited Morgan Freeman, Bette Midler, Sidney Poitier and Claire Danes to provide voiceovers for spots that have helped the organization achieve a national presence.

The couple, via their family foundation, also support Chapman University, the American Film Institute (Daly chairs the board of trustees), UCLA Foundation, Lupus LA, New Visions for Public Schools, and the Center for Early Education.

OTHER: Daly once chaired the board of trustees for Save the Children, which the couple supports. They have also supported Children’s Action Network and Doctors Without Borders.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple’s modest support of select Los Angeles institutions to continue.
