OVERVIEW: The Michelson Found Animals Foundation aims to improve the lives of dogs and cats in the U.S.

IP TAKE: Michelson’s grantmaking includes support for research on cost effective spay and neuter procedures for dogs and cats, as well as a broad range of animal rescue, adoption and general well-being initiatives. California and Texas appear to be geographic areas of priority, but this funder does name specific areas of focus. Michelson accepts applications for its various grant programs, but guidelines and due dates vary significantly by program; grantseekers are advised to consult the appropriate program page prior to submitting requests for funding.

PROFILE: Established in 2005, the Michelson Found Animals Foundation was founded by billionaire surgeon Gary Michelson. The foundation aims to improve the state of animal welfare.

The foundation’s programs include: Adopt & Shop, a humane-model retail and pet adoption boutique in the Los Angeles area, where all pets offered for adoption are from local shelter partners; Microchip & Registry, which offers affordable microchips and scanners to shelters and nonprofit organizations nationwide as well as a free-for-life, national microchip registry called Found Animals Registry; and Spaying and neuter services for dogs and cats. The foundation also runs the Michelson Prize & Grants in Reproductive Biology program to “incentivize research through prize philanthropy and grant funding to rapidly develop a single-dose, nonsurgical sterilant for male and female cats and dogs.” Found Animals Foundation offers Michelson Grants to scientists to pursue nonsurgical sterilization technologies for cats and dogs and will award the $25 million Michelson Prize to the first entity to provide the organization with the successful product that meets its criteria. Michelson’s Better Neighbor Project initiative supports underserved communities and their pets, and the foundation’s Lifesaving Grants support spay/neuter and surrender prevention programs.

This funder made approximately $1.7 million in grants in a recent year, with grants ranging from $50 to almost $200,000. Grantmaking touches Southern California, particularly Los Angeles. Texas is another region of giving. Past grantees include Stray Cat Alliance, Spay 4 La, City of Los Angeles Animal Services, Austin Pets Alive!, and Best Friends Animal Society.

The foundation accepts applications for its various funding opportunities, but guidelines and due dates vary significantly by program. Prospective grantees are advised to review program pages carefully before applying. Submit general inquiries to the foundation via the organization’s contact page.
