Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation

Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation

OVERVIEW: Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation’s grantmaking includes support of African conservation organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: Founded in 2010, the Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation was established by Entercom Communications founder Joseph Field and his wife Marie. The Fields have an older charity, the Joseph and Marie Field Foundation, through which they support arts and educational organizations in Philadelphia. The larger Field family, including current Enercom CEO David Field, are on the books for the Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation. David Field serves on such boards as Wilderness Society. Tax filings suggest that the Joseph and Marie Field Environmental Foundation’s grantmaking includes African conservation organizations.

Overall, conservation appears very important in this funder’s work. A grant to Conservation International, for instance, supported a project in Suriname to “work to conserve natural capital, the foundation of socio-economic development.” Past grantees include African Wildlife Foundation, Amboseli Trust for Elephants, Conservation International, NRDC, and Wildlife Conservation Society. A component of the foundation’s grantmaking also includes global development work, with support going to places like Innovation: Africa, a nonprofit that “brings Israeli solar, water and agricultural innovations to rural African villages.”

Important Grant Information

Given the foundation's lack of transparency, it is unclear from its tax filings whether the foundation accepts LOIs or unsolicited applications; however, if left unstated, it is likely that it does not.
