OVERVIEW: The Kaleidoscope Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to the conservation, education, and community support.

IP TAKE: The foundation does not accept proposals from organizations, but its founders are interested in talking to others curious about the land trust movement.

PROFILE: Established in 1997, the Kaleidoscope Foundation was founded by tech couple Richard Leeds and his wife Anne Kroeker. Richard founded CPI Corp., which describes itself as a Research & Development lab implementing Conversation Processing Intelligence. The Kaleidoscope Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to the conservation, education, and community support.

Kaleidoscope Foundation serves as an umbrella organization for two funds which guide Richard and Anne’s giving. Their Wildlife Forever Fund works with the Land Trust Alliance, and with other land trusts and organizations that promote wildlife conservation, education, recreation, business ventures and scientific investigations—primarily in the Northwest. Meanwhile, their Educational Legacy Fund works with organizations providing sustainable business education, experiential environmental education, STEM training and public education projects. The couple are passionate supporters of land conservation and are statewide and national leaders in the land trust movement. Both East Coast natives, the couple explains they fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. They are steady supporters of Washington Association of Land Trusts and members of the Land Trust Alliance’s National Council. The extended Leeds family gave a $35 million gift to University of Colorado at Boulder College of Business to endow the CU-Boulder business school. Not only did Leeds attend the school but so did his brother Michael.

Grants range from $51 to $31,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $307,000. Past grantees include Audubon Society - Washington, New York, National; Chehalis River Basin Land Trust; Conservation Northwest; Ducks Unlimited; Washington Forest Law Center; The Nature Conservancy; and Forterra.
