Penguin Random House Foundation

Penguin Random House Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Penguin Random House Foundation makes grants to support writers and readers, and to champion the cause of literature in general.

IP TAKE: This funder prioritizes support for libraries, teachers, and student writers. Grant seekers who fall outside these targeted groups should look elsewhere for support.

PROFILE: Penguin Random House Foundation is the grantmaking arm of Penguin Random House, the multinational publishing company formed when Random House and Penguin Group merged in 2013. It seeks to encourage “the next generation of readers and authors” and to promote “diverse voices and stories.” The foundation makes grants to support writing through its Creative Writing Award program.

Random House Creative Writing Awards supports student writers by awarding five high school seniors a college scholarship of up to $10,000. The program has made over $2.6 million in grants since its inception in 1994. Grant seekers should be sure to read the application guidelines before applying. Grant seekers should keep a close eye on deadlines as the application process closes when the program receives 600 applications. Check out the News page for announcements, deadlines, and profiles of past grantees.

Penguin Random House also supports libraries and teachers with targeted grants for each.
