OVERVIEW: Sisters in Crime supports female writers of crime and mystery fiction, and seeks to increase the visibility of women in the genre.
IP TAKE: This is a highly specialized grantmaker, but for grant seekers whose writing project overlaps with the mystery genre, this is a good funder to know.
PROFILE: Created in 1987 by a group of twenty-six women crime writers, Sisters in Crime has over 3,500 members and 51 chapters globally. It seeks to “promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers.” It supports writing through grants, scholarships, and awards.
Academic Research Grants support research into the role of women and other underrepresented groups in crime writing. Grants are up to $500 and fund the purchase of books needed for a research project.
Education Grants reimburse up to $150 in registration costs for select conferences, workshops, and classes. A complete list of eligible events is available on the page.
The Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award supports emerging writers of color with an annual $2,000 grant for professional development activities. Grant seekers must submit a short story or several chapters from their manuscript, as well as a brief biographical statement and a cover letter explaining their project.
The Dorothy Cannell Scholarship funds one Sisters in Crime member’s trip to the Malice Domestic conference in Bethesda, Maryland. The scholarship is $1,000. To apply, members should submit a 200 word email to firstname.lastname@example.org stating how attending the conference aligns with their writing goals.
Sisters in Crime also supports bookstores, libraries, and short story writers. The We Love Bookstores grants provide bookstores with $500 to use for promotion or to host a book signing. The We Love Libraries grant supports libraries with $1,000 to put toward the purchase of books. The We Love Short Stories program provides members with subscription discounts to a long list of crime and mystery magazines.
