Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust: Grants for Diseases

OVERVIEW: The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust supports organizations working in pediatric cancer and other illnesses. The trust prioritizes groups in the Metro Washington, D.C., region.

IP TAKE: The Stewart Trust supports organizations both large and small. Organizations located outside the D.C. area should make sure to highlight how their work aligns with the trust’s objectives in your letter of inquiry.

PROFILE: The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust was established in 1947, and has since supported organizations that are “researching, treating, and preventing cancer and pediatric illnesses.” The Stewart Trust’s grantmaking is primarily limited to the Metro DC area, including parts of Maryland and Virginia. On occasion, the trust does award grants to organizations operating outside the DC region, typically to institutions located in other large metro areas, such as New York. Stewart’s two main focus areas are pediatric care and cancer.

Stewart prioritizes pediatric illnesses and cancer, with an emphasis on treatment and research. Its support for cancer treatment centers on “low income populations in the Nation’s Capitol.” It also supports early-career scientists who are researching cancer cures with “new approaches in genetics, structural biology, and related fields.” In addition to its regular grantmaking, the trust has partnered with the Pew Charitable Trusts for the Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research award. The award is bestowed upon early career scientists researching cures for cancer.

Grants typically range from $25,000 to $100,000. To learn more about the types of organizations the trust supports, explore its impact page.

The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust accepts grant applications throughout the year. Those applications should be received by the trust around the middle of September to have a chance at getting funding the following year. See the trust’s application page for additional details.
