PROFILE: Established in 2010, the Stewart J. Rahr Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of pharmaceuticals billionaire Stewart Rahr. Rahr is the founder of drug wholesale business, Kinray, which was purchased by Cardinal Health in 2010 for $1.3 billion. In 2010, Rahr established the Stewart J. Rahr Foundation, whose mission statement briefly reads: "Investing in our world's future... supporting our youth, education, and medical research."
The Rahr Foundation has no stated interest in any specific disease, but its medical research grantmaking has supported a broad range of disease-related organizations. Cancer is a major concern, with past grantees including Milken's Prostate Cancer Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Children's Tumor Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Play for Pink, St. Baldrick's Foundation (which deals with pediatric cancer), Israel Cancer Research Fund, Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research, and The Brain Tumor Foundation.
Aside from cancer, Rahr supports a broad range of disease-related organizations. Its support for autism includes AABR, The Darryl Strawberry Foundation for Autism Awareness, Foundation for Autism Training and Education. It has also supported outfits that deal with HIV/AIDS, such as Keep a Child Alive and the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Other past grantees include the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, the Crohn’s and Colitis Association of America, and the March of Dimes.
Rahr is not fully transparent about its grant amounts, but tax filings suggest that its grants generally range from $10,000 to $100,000, although it occasionally makes grants in the millions.
