V Foundation for Cancer Research: Grants for Diseases

OVERVIEW: The V Foundation for Cancer Research supports cancer research across the United States.

IP TAKE: This funder supports well-established researchers and respected organizations in the scientific community.

PROFILE: Established in 1995, the V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by famed basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano, who died in 1993, less than a year after receiving his cancer diagnosis. The foundation has since awarded nearly $200 million to support cancer research around the country. The foundation seeks to "make a difference by generating broad-based support for cancer research and by creating an urgent awareness among all Americans of the importance of the war against cancer." The V Foundation performs these dual roles through advocacy, education, fundraising and philanthropy. Its Grant Program includes the V Scholar Grant, Translational Grant, Designated Grant, and Mission Grant.

The V Foundation’s V Scholar Grant supports “young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research careers” with either “laboratory-based fundamental research” or translational research. The Translational Grant supports research projects that will lead to “planning or initiation of a clinical trial.” The Designated Grant supports “basic or translational research at research institutions that may reach beyond our usual grant list.” The Mission Grant is a smaller award for projects that align with the mission of the V Foundation, but do not involve “direct support of a research project.”

The V Foundation’s grants generally range from $100,000 to $200,000 per year for a multi-year period. The foundation generally prioritizes scientists and investigators working at or affiliated with major medical institutions and universities. The V Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals. Each year, the foundation issues requests for nominations to affiliated cancer centers and colleges and universities across the United States.
