Trafigura Foundation: Grants for Global Development

OVERVIEW: The Trafigura Foundation adopts a relatively broad approach to its global development grantmaking, and focuses on sustainable development projects. It prioritizes rural economic development, education, vocational training, and social entrepreneurship, among other areas.

IP TAKE: Trafigura tends to establish multi-year relationships with its grantees and expects its supported projects to have a meaningful and measurable impact. Grantseekers should also be able to demonstrate that impact clearly and on a regular basis—Trafigura likes to check in with its grantees fairly often.

PROFILE: Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the Trafigura Foundation is the charitable arm of the global commodity trading and logistics company of the same name. In the global development space, the foundation focuses on “creating the right conditions for the development and growth of self-sufficient communities," which permits it to support a variety of projects including those related to the development or rural areas, education, vocational training, and social entrepreneurship. The foundation maintains programs in sustainable development, education & integration, and health.

Trafigura supports organizations around the world in areas where it has a significant business presence, such as in North America, Latin America, Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Grantmaking tends to support projects that address the developing world. Other grants have been awarded to organizations that work to benefit marginalized populations in Europe, but not in Australia or North America.

The foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications, which must be in English, throughout the year. Foundation executives examine initial requests for funding and pass them on to board executives should the project fall within Trafigura’s areas of funding interest.
