American Express: Grants for Global Development

January 22, 2018/ Sue-Lynn Moses

OVERVIEW: American Express offers grants to a wide variety of global development organizations around the world.

IP TAKE: This corporate funder awards both project specific and general operating support grants.

PROFILE: Global financial services company American Express conducts its philanthropic work through the American Express Corporate Social Responsibility program. With the overall aim of “[s]upporting communities in ways that enhance the company’s reputation with employees, customers, business partners and other stakeholders,” the program awards grants to “[v]isionary nonprofit organizations,” through three major program areas: Leadership, Historic Preservation, and Community Service.

American Express grants can range anywhere from $5,000 to $1.5 million. Most grants, however, typically fall in the $10,000 to $100,000 range. Past grantees include the Taproot Foundation, a social change organization providing pro bono professional services; and the Resource Foundation, a nonprofit focusing on building relationships between donors and sustainable development organizations in Latin America. To learn more about American Express grantees, explore its most recent grants list.

American Express accepts unsolicited grant applications from eligible organizations on a rolling basis. While it awards grants to organizations located across the United States, it gives grantmaking priority to the following U.S. and global locations.
