OVERVIEW: The Stavros Niarchos Foundation funds a variety of pressing development challenges, which includes education and access to healthcare.
IP TAKE: This foundation supports projects that add value to society and those that can have a broad and sustainable impact. The foundation strongly supports collaborative efforts tackling some of the world’s most pressing global development challenges.
PROFILE: The Stavros Niarchos Foundation launched its grantmaking activites in 1996, the same year its namesake passed away. Stavros Niarchos was known as a Greek shipping magnate in the business world, and a big supporter of Greek philanthropy. As a result, the foundation's grantmaking reflects a deep tie to Greece dedicating at least 50 percent of its funding to projects in Greece. However, it awards many grants to international development organizations working beyond Greece. In addition, the foundation maintains offices in Greece, Monaco, and the United States. It prioritizes giving to arts and culture, education, health and sports, and social welfare.
While the foundation directs a majority of its global development related grants through its Social Welfare program, Niarchos also gives internationally through its health, education, and arts and culture programs. It allocates the most grants to arts and culture.
On a smaller scale, the foundation also supports disaster aid and relief organizations; however, these grants tend to support larger international organizations like Doctors Without Borders. Additionally, the foundation has increased its refugee-related grantmaking. At present, it appears to concentrate its refugee related grantmaking in Greece.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation does accept unsolicited letters of inquiry via its website. U.S.-based organizations should contact the Stavros Niarchos Foundation USA’s (SNF USA) New York office with any additional questions.
