OVERVIEW: The cosmetics company Lush focuses its philanthropic giving on environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights.
IP TAKE: Lush Cosmetics prioritizes uncrowded funding fields and grassroots organizations.
PROFILE: Lush Cosmetics bases its charitable giving on the belief that it is the company’s “[r]esponsiblity to advocate for the environment, animals and people in need.” Lush supports nonprofit organizations around the world focusing on grassroots groups working in environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights.
Lush does not have a grantmaking program dedicated to global development; however, its human rights grantmaking takes an intersectional approach and supports global development initiatives. Areas of funding interest in the global development space include matters such as sustainable industrial agriculture, human rights, gender equality, indigenous groups and vulnerable populations. Across all of its giving priorities, Lush supports “[n]on-violent direct action groups” working to create systematic change over the long-term.
Lush supports groups with annual incomes of $500,000 or more. Its philanthropic work limits grants to a maximum of $25,000 per project and prioritizes “less popular” initiatives that have difficulty obtaining funding. Organizations based in the North America and working overseas must demonstrate how they are involving local communities in the decision-making and implantation of the project.
Lush accepts unsolicited grant applications throughout the year via its website.
