Innocent Foundation: Grants for Global Development

OVERVIEW: The U.K.-based Innocent Foundation centers its grantmaking on food insecurity and severe acute malnutrition in children.

IP TAKE: While the Innocent Foundation won’t rule out backing larger organizations, it prefers to support those with an annual turnover of less than £5 million. Note that funding here is very competitive. This funder requires potential grantees to jump through several hoops before a funding proposal is approved. Prepare to provide a research-backed proposal, along with a realistic, rather than hopeful budget and timeline. To learn more about how giving may be evolving and how grantmaking works, send as a message at hello@innocentfoundation.org. This funder is approachable, though not accessible for non-UK registered funders.

This funder does use measurements like the Global Hunger Index, which “combines indicators of undernutrition, childhood stunting and child mortality, to help us see where the need is greatest and where we can have the most impact on hungry people.” It is also particularly interested in funding innovative research that studies and provides solutions to world hunger.

Unfortunately, this is not an accessible funder even for UK-registered charities. Grantmaking appears closed to grantees that it pre-selects.

PROFILE: When Adam Balon, Jon Wright and Richard Reed cofounded Innocent Drinks in 1999, they committed to pledge 10 percent of the company’s profits to charity. In 2004, they solidified this commitment by establishing the Innocent Foundation, which is on a mission “towards a world with zero hunger by 2030.” Based in London, the Innocent Foundation awards grants to U.K.-registered organizations that tackle food insecurity and severe acute malnutrition in children. It prioritizes giving to its seed funding program, local food poverty concerns, the creation of breakthrough development and emergency hunger relief.

Grants for Global Development

The Innocent Foundation’s grantmaking focuses on two goals, ending childhood hunger and helping the poorest families to feed themselves.

The ending childhood hunger program funds projects “which diagnose and treat children whose lives are in immediate danger because of severe hunger. The most serious form of hunger is called acute malnutrition, which causes millions of preventable child deaths each year.” Previous grantees and partners include Action Against Hunger, among others.

The Innocent Foundation’s second goal and program addresses helping the poorest families to feed themselves. The foundation has funded over 70 food security projects around the world since it started this work; however, as climate change factors increase food insecurity, the foundation has increased funding for cutting edge research that provides solutions to global food insecurity.

Important Grant Details:

Grantseekers should note that Innocent grants are limited to UK-registered charities. Geographically, the foundation focuses on groups working in countries listed on the Global Hunger Index. Eligible organizations must also have at least three years of accounts available for review. The foundation accepts unsolicited grant application throughout the year.

Past grantees include Renewable World, myAgro, KickStart International, Send a Cow, and the Aga Khan Foundation, among others.
