Capital One Foundation: Grants for Higher Education

OVERVIEW: The Capital One Foundation’s higher education grants tend to focus on ensuring that college students succeed and workforce development initiatives.

IP TAKE: This funder typically awards project and program specific grants rather than those to support general operating costs. Note that this funder only offers limited grantmaking to higher education; however, it’s worth consideration given that its grants to higher education can number in the millions.

PROFILE: The Capital One Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Capital One, a financial services company founded by Richard Fairbank in 1988. The foundation’s areas of grantmaking focus include education, financial literacy, and community development projects and initiatives. The foundation also partners with local nonprofits “with missions that complement” its areas of grantmaking focus, which include Skills for the 21st Century, Financial Well-Being, Small Business Development, and Affordable Housing.

While the foundation does not operate a dedicated higher education grantmaking program, it has an established history of supporting colleges and universities across the United States, and tends to award such grants across its programs. For example, the Dallas County Community College District Foundation is a past grantee, having received support for its American Workforce project. The Research Foundation of the City University of New York is also a former Capital One grantee, having received an award for its leadership though workforce development framework at Kingsborough Community College. The Capital One Foundation does not name specific education-related grantmaking strategies.

Grant amounts can range anywhere from $10,000 to over $6 million, though most range from $10,000 to $200,000. Capital One supports local and national organizations in its priority grantmaking areas.

The Capital One Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
