Shelter Hill Foundation: Grants for K-12 Education

OVERVIEW: The Shelter Hill Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of Goldman Sachs veteran Paul Shiverick and his wife Betsy. The foundation supports education through charters, advocacy organizations, and more.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile. As a result, it is unclear what it seeks in its education grantees. In addition, it does not accept unsolicited proposals.

PROFILE: Hedge fund veteran Paul Shiverick and his wife Betsy oversee the Shelter Hill Foundation, which gave away around $2.4 million in a recent year. Shiverick and Betsy serve as president and vice president of the foundation respectively. The foundation prioritizes giving to schools and education organizations, which encompasses both higher education and the K-12 space.

Shiverick recently joined the board of American Federation of Children, a Betsy DeVos chaired organization. According to Shiverick, “the greatest catalyst of success in this country is a quality education and we should stop at nothing to help parents, especially from low-income families, give their children an opportunity to realize the American dream by sending them to a school that best fits their needs.”

Recent grantees include Teach for America; St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta, Georgia; Medfield Public Schools in Massachusetts; Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Maryland; Charleston School for Math and Science; Boys Latin of Philadelphia; and the Hawken School in Ohio, where Shiverick sits on the board. Shiverick and DeVos are both connected to the schools. Indeed, Shiverick graduated from the Hawken School, while DeVos graduated from Stone Ridge School.

Grants range widely, and the foundation does not accept letters of inquiry; however, grantseekers should consider contacting the organization in order to learn how to secure a grant.
