Entergy Charitable Foundation: Grants for K-12 Education

OVERVIEW: The Entergy Charitable Foundation prioritizes education, poverty, the environment and diversity and inclusion in the states where it maintains power operations. Its education program prioritizes early childhood, but makes substantial grants to organizations serving K-12 populations.

IP TAKE: Entergy's education program prioritizes early childhood education but also supports many K-12 programs. This funder runs an ongoing, open application process through its website.

PROFILE: The Entergy Charitable Foundation was established in 2000 by the Entergy Corporation, a producer and retail distributor of electric power. Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, the foundation "strives to contribute to a society that is healthy, educated, environmentally safe and productive." Its funding priorities are education, poverty, the environment and diversity and inclusion.

Entergy's education funding aims to "level the playing field in the area of education for at-risk children from high poverty communities." The foundation prioritizes early childhood education, but supports many organizations involved in K-12 education as well. One grantee, Start the Adventure in Reading, provides extensive tutoring to struggling readers in the early elementary grades at schools in New Orleans. In New York, Entergy supports Jazz for Young People and the Middle School Jazz Academy, among other music education programs at Lincoln Center.

Entergy awards open grants ranging from $25,000 to $200,000 and micro grants in amounts up to $1,000. The foundation generally supports organizations in the states where it operates power plants: Arkansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York and Texas. A complete list of recent grantees is provided on the foundation's website.

Grant applications are accepted through Entergy's online portal on an ongoing basis. Application reviews take between 8 and 12 weeks.
