PROFILE: Based in Cary, North Carolina, SAS (Statistical Analysis System) was established in 1966 with a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a cooperative effort of six universities to develop means of analyzing large sets of public data. The organization became a private corporation in 1976 and has satellite offices across the U.S. and in more than 70 nations around the world. Its philanthropic endeavors aim to "develop the next generation of innovators" by supporting STEM education and third-grade reading programs.
SAS supports K-12 education through monetary donations to nonprofit organizations, signature education programs and by making its technology freely available to educators around the world. Recipients of SAS funding include Communities in Schools, a national organization offering support to at-risk students and promoting high school completion; Computer Science Education Week, a national event that encourages students to take an interest in computer science and coding; and the YMCA of the Triangle, a North Carolina consortium that offers after-school and summer academic support and enrichment for children and teens. SAS's signature programs prioritize students in North Carolina. In collaboration with the North Carolina Museum of Natural History, SAS runs the STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities, and throughout North Carolina, SAS has supported the 1-to1 Learning Partnership, which supports teachers in rural areas with technology and professional development. SAS also makes several of its products and services freely available to all educators; SAS Curriculum Pathways and SAS Programming for High School are two examples of such programs.
SAS prioritizes programs serving North Carolina and areas near SAS headquarters in the U.S. and abroad. Proposals are reviewed in the order they are received in February, May, August and November of each year. Guidelines for application are available on the SAS website.
