Booz Allen Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Booz Allen Foundation has announced its intention to support career transition programs for veterans, STEM education and youth development in the United States, as well as global health initiatives.

IP TAKE: The Booz Allen Foundaiton appears to have engaged in robust grantmaking in the late 2010s, but since then grants have tapered off significantly. Grantseekers working with veterans, youth or health care should keep an eye on this funder for renewed interest in philanthropy. So far, Booz Allen is neither accessible nor transparent, making it harder to secure a grant here. It’s unclear how closely it works with its grantees given its new state.

PROFILE: The Booz Allen Foundation was established in 2017 with a $5 million pledge from Booz Allen Hamilton, a global IT and consulting firm based in Washington D.C. The foundation’s broader mission is to “use innovation and technology advancements to help solve challenging social issues and build community resilience.” The foundation is a separate entity from Booz Allen Hamilton and its grantmaking is intended to complement Booz Allen’s corporate giving. Its first gift was a $129,000 employee-matching donation to the American Red Cross for disaster relief efforts. Booz Allen funds work related to global health, veterans and military families, and youth and education.

Grants for Economic Development, Veterans and STEM Education

Booz Allen Hamilton’s previous grantmaking for veterans includes “supporting training in cyber and STEM careers, and providing data analytics and other tech solutions in support of operations.” In the realm of education, the company has also worked to “close the STEM gender gap and build the strongest, most diverse pipeline of future STEM talent.” Past philanthropic partners include Hiring Our Heroes, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and Girls Inc.

Grants for Global Health

The foundation has yet to develop its global health grantmaking strategy fully. According to the foundation’s website, “[d]etailed plans for the foundation and its giving will be developed and announced” in the coming months. Applicants should keep an eye on this funder’s evolving global health funding.

Grants for Mental Health

The Booz Allen Foundation has not yet fully developed its health grantmaking priorities, but according to its website, Booz Allen has previously “taken a leadership role on eliminating the stigma around mental health and building more appreciation and awareness of emotional fitness in the corporate world.” There is a significant chance that mental health care will be a component of Booz Allen’s grantmaking in the future.

Grants for Humanitarian Relief

The foundation’s disaster response and relief program is currently under development. Early grants appear to support larger, national organizations such as the American Red Cross, which received the foundation’s first grant. The Red Cross grant went to support disaster relief efforts in Orlando, Florida; Houston, Texas, and Tampa, Florida.
