OVERVIEW: The majority of TEGNA's grants support organizations in human services, social services, health, and mental health fields.
IP TAKE: TEGNA prioritizes local and grassroots groups, so large national organizations may not find much funding luck here.
PROFILE: TEGNA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the media and digital company TEGNA Inc. Through its Community Grant program, the foundation seeks to “empower the people we serve by supporting the future of our communities.”
The foundation awards grants to groups in communities in which the TEGNA company has an employee and operational presence. While the foundation’s goal is to improve the neighborhoods where its employees live and work, TEGNA notes that around 80 percent of its community grants are awarded to organizations with “social/human services, health, and mental health” aspects to their work.
Grants prioritize local and grassroots groups. Awards are modest, typically from $1,000 to $5,000. TEGNA does not target a specific beneficiary group, but grants tend to go to organizations working with youth and disadvantaged populations.
TEGNA Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding and has two funding cycles per year. The deadlines for submissions are February 28 and August 29. Applicants should expect to hear from the foundation within three to four months of the deadlines.
Deadlines are subject to change so grant seekers should check the foundation’s website to ensure that their applications are received in time. For additional information, applicants are asked to contact their local TEGNA station managers.
