PROFILE: Established in 1936, the Fuller Foundation is the private foundation of Alvan T. Fuller and based in Rye Beach, New Hampshire. Fuller served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was a U.S. Representative for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Lieutenant Governor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Governor of Massachusetts between 1914 and 1929. Today, the funder aims to “improve the quality of life for people, animals and the environment.” Grantmaking areas of interest include wildlife, the arts and at-risk youth.
Wildlife grants focus on public education about habitats, protecting endangered species, animal shelters and hospitals, and human/animal enrichment programs. Art grants focus on art education in schools, performing arts festivals, symphony, opera, theater and museum education. Finally, at-risk youth grants focus on programs that benefit at least 25 youth between the ages of 12 and 18 who are at or below the poverty line. These grants fund early education about alcohol and drugs, peer leadership through outdoor education, and alternative educational experiences. The foundation also funds the separate but related Fuller Foundation of New Hampshire, which provides educational and horticultural programs at Fuller Gardens.
The foundation provides lists of some previous grant recipients on the category pages of the causes it supports. Fuller funds wildlife organizations across the U.S.; however, art and at-risk youth grants are limited to the Boston area (inside 128) and the immediate Seacoast area of New Hampshire. The funder does not provide multi-year grants and rarely supports capital projects.
The Fuller Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits during two time periods each year and uses an online grants system. It accepts application materials between December 1 and January 15 for May meeting consideration and between May 1 and June 15 for October meeting consideration.
