IP TAKE: This is a family-run foundation with no outside or full-time staff. Keep your initial pitch short and to the point to get your foot in the door.
PROFILE: The Trust Family Foundation (TFF) was established in 1986 in New Hampshire and is based in Auburndale, Massachusetts. This funder has close ties to the New England area and focuses its grantmaking there.
Foundation interests are Jewish causes, education, medical technology, and the arts. Activities that combine two or more of these interests may be given priority. TFF regularly supports both existing programs and start-up projects in the New England states. Trust only funds specific programs, and does not award unrestricted funds for general operating costs or for organizational endowments, nor does it support public school systems, salaries, state and city governments, private foundations, and international organizations.
Only one proposal is considered per organization per year. TFF does not consider proposals from nonprofits that have been previously rejected three times. The first step in applying for a TFF grant is to provide a brief description of your project—150 words or less. This submission is made through the foundation website. Expect to hear back within 60 days with either a request for additional materials or a rejection. From there, you’ll need to submit your financial request and tax-exempt documents.
In a recent year, TFF had over $18 million in total net assets. Grants have gone to the New England Aquarium, WGBH, Children’s Hospital Corp., the Brookline Foundation, the Jewish Federation, and M.I.T. Community Fellows. All of these grants were between $7,500 and $110,000. Other grants have been more like $1,000 and $2,5000 recently. Recent annual contributions, gifts, and grants paid have exceeded $1.7 million.
This is truly a family foundation with the board solely made up of Trust family members, including Martin Trust, Diane Trust, Laura Trust, and David Trust. Delphine Skilling is the foundation administrator.
