OVERVIEW: Bruce Worster and his wife Susan move their philanthropy through the Susan & Bruce Worster Foundation. The couple has steadily supported their mutual alma mater University of California, Santa Barbara. Via their foundation, the couple has given to a handful of outfits lately.  

BACKGROUND:  Bruce Worster received a B.S. in physics from Harvey Mudd College in 1964, a Ph.D. in physics from UCSB in 1971, and an MBA from Santa Clara University in 1977. Worster was a physicist at Hewlett-Packard and later moved to leadership roles at Measurex, Surface Science Instruments, Tencor Instruments and Ultrapointe Corporation, where he was founder, CTO and president. He retired in 2001 as vice president from JDS-Uniphase Corporation, a leading supplier for the telecommunications industry.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Worster has supported alma mater Harvey Mudd College in suburban Los Angeles. The school is home to the Susan and Bruce Worster Professor of Physics. Worster and Susan have also supported UCSB—Susan sits on the board of UCSB Foundation. The couple endowed the Worster Chair in Experimental Physics at the school.

The Worsters have also supported Math for America, Occidental College, and Wellesley College.

OTHER: The couple has supported San Jose Museum of Art. 

LOOKING FORWARD: The Worster couple’s giving via their foundation has stuck to a few outfits lately. It’s unclear if an uptick in giving is in the cards.
