OVERVIEW: Jawad Khaki and his wife Kaniz established the Khaki Foundation in December 2003 to aid the most vulnerable members of society with essential needs and educational endeavors to alleviate poverty and suffering.

BACKGROUND: A native of Tanzania, Jawad Khaki led development of operating Systems, networking and cloud computing software from 1979 to 2015.  He worked at Microsoft Corporation for two decades where he served as a Corporate Vice President.

ISSUES:

GLOBAL EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT: The Khaki Foundation is laser-focused on global efforts to alleviate poverty and expand education. The foundation’s grantmaking recently supported organizations like Health Tanzania Foundation, towards developing a “community self-help infrastructure in the Buguruni and Vingunguti Wards in the Ilala District of Dar es Salaam” ; University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and its Global Cancer Program; Muslim Advocates; Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania; and WIPAHS, toward working for orphans and education of needy students, and economically uplifting  needy Mingoyo Villagers through small loans.

In 1997 Khaki also helped establish the Ithna‐asheri Muslim Association of the Northwest (IMAN) and serves as its president. IMAN aims to “provide an environment that will allow individuals to grow and contribute to human progress with a view to seek closeness to Allah SWT.”

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to remain laser-focused on its select interest areas. Khaki’s personal website explains that he is “presently exploring how technology can improve access and raise standards of education. He envisions an America that, with its rich tapestry of pluralism, incorporating all ethnicities and religions, inspires not only those just within its borders but all those who inhabit our planet.”
