OVERVIEW: Donald Valentine and his family move their philanthropy through the Valentine Family Foundation, which focuses its grantmaking on the San Francisco Bay Area and on Montana, where Valentine has been a part-time resident. Philanthropy has primarily focused on education, with support also going to health and human services. Valentine has funded technology equipment in local Montana schools.
BACKGROUND: Donald Valentine was a founder of National Semiconductor and senior sales and marketing executive with Fairchild Semiconductor before going on to launch Sequoia Capital, in 1972. In that role, Valentine was one of the original investors in Apple Computer, Atari, LSI Logic, Cisco Systems, Oracle, and Electronic Arts, among other staples of the technology industry.
EDUCATION: Donald Valentine and family, through their Valentine Family Foundation, have heavily focused on education. Valentine's daughter Hilary plays a role here, and she's also an emeritus chair of Room to Read, a nonprofit founded by former Microsoft star John Wood, which focuses on literacy and gender equality in education across Asia and Africa. Grantees have included Stanford University, University High School, and Eastside Preparatory School.
While some of this philanthropy involves Bay Area schools, another important site of Valentine's philanthropy is Montana, where Valentine has been a part-time resident. The Valentine School Technology Program, run through the Montana Community Foundation, has supported K-12 public schools in Ravalli County steadily over the years. Valentine has bankrolled equipment for computer labs and media production, textbooks and software for training and website design, and digital camera equipment. The current status of the program is uncertain.
HEALTH: Hilary Valentine sits on the board of the Canary Foundation, a Bay Area outfit "dedicated to the goal of identifying cancer early through a simple blood test and then isolating it with imaging." The family supports the organization. Other grantees have included Packard Children's Hospital, Breast Cancer Connections and the UCSF Cardiology Council.
HUMAN SERVICES: The Valentine family has supported Ronald McDonald House.
LOOKING FORWARD: Valentine's children are involved with the foundation and should be watched down the line. Apart from Hilary, Valentine's son Christian has supported his alma mater UC Berkeley, with his wife, including establishing a chair at Haas School of Business in management of technology.
