Jayshree and Vijay Ullal

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Arista Networks, Fairchild

FUNDING AREAS: Education, Cancer Research

OVERVIEW: Jayshree and Vijay Ullal reportedly launched a foundation to support cancer research, social services projects, and hunger relief programs in India. Other giving has touched education and community causes.

BACKGROUND: Born in London and raised in India, Jayshree Ullal graduated with a B.S. in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University and received her M.S. from Santa Clara University. She was senior vice president at Cisco Systems, and went on to become president and CEO of Arista Networks, a computer networking firm.

Vijay Ullal graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering from IIT Madras, and an M.S. in chemical engineering from Drexel University. He was an engineering manager at Intel, and also worked at Saratoga Semiconductor. He went on to become president and COO of Fairchild Semiconductor. He currently works as an investor in early stage companies.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: The Ullals have supported MIT, where their daughter earned her Ph.D. Vijay is active with ITT Madras, once serving as chairman of the board of ITT Madras Foundation.

CANCER RESEARCH: The Ullals reportedly launched a foundation to support cancer research, social services projects, and hunger relief programs in India; There was no record of this that we could find, per U.S. 990 tax forms, so perhaps the organization runs in India. Ullal’s sister passed from cancer so the forces here are personal.

OTHER: Vijay recently joined the board of the Santa Fe Institute, a “private, not-for-profit, independent research and education center that pioneered the science of complex adaptive systems.”

LOOKING FORWARD: In her late 50s, Ullal is still very much engaged in business. Perhaps the couple’s giving will ramp up in the coming years — and with more transparency.
