OVERVIEW:  Rick and Donnalyn Adams move their philanthropy through the Adams Charitable Foundation. The couple strongly support digital rights organizations, including Electronic Frontier Foundation.

BACKGROUND:  Rick Adams has a master’s degree in computer science from Purdue University. He worked as a Defense Department researcher and went on to found UUnet Technologies, the first commercial ISP and one of the largest internet traffic carriers in the world in the 1990s. 

ISSUES:

DIGITAL RIGHTS & POLICY: Given Adams’ pioneering work in the internet and digital space, it’s no surprise that much of his family’s philanthropy focuses on these issues. Rich and Donnalyn have supported Electronic Frontier Foundation; Internet Security Research Group; Chemical Heritage Foundation, “an institution that preserves and promotes understanding of the history of science”; New Media Rights; National Capital Poison Center; and James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), whose mission includes “educating the public and the media on the dangers of accepting unproven claims, and to support research into paranormal claims in controlled scientific experimental conditions.”

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include the National Gallery of Art. Note that Donnalyn is a writer, editor, and book conservator.
