OVERVIEW:  Stephen Gill, his wife Margaret, and family move their philanthropy through the Stephen & Margaret Gill Family Foundation. Giving is varied and includes the arts, environment, and global causes. 

BACKGROUND: Stephen P. Gill earned a B.S. from MIT and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He worked for Raytheon Corp. and as a research physicist for Stanford Research Institute. Gill had various roles at Artec Associates, including founder, president, and chief scientist, and at Votan Corp., as founder, president, chief scientist, and chairman of the board.

ISSUES:  

ENVIRONMENT & CIVIL RIGHTS: The Gill family, via their foundation, has supported Environmental Defense Fund, ACLU Foundation, Planned Parenthood Federation, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Asian Law Caucus, and National Association for Olmstead Parks. (Margaret Gill was a lawyer for decades.)

ARTS & CULTURE: Margaret serves as a vice chair of San Francisco Ballet Association. Grantees include San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Opera, Asian Art Museum, Stonington Opera House, SFMOMA, and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale.

RELIGIOUS & GLOBAL: Margaret sits on the president’s council of United Religions Initiative (URI), “a global grassroots interfaith network that cultivates peace and justice by engaging people to bridge religious and cultural differences and work together for the good of their communities and the world.” The family foundation supports URI. She was also president of Episcopal Church in the Diocese of California.

Other grantees include Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance, Episcopal Community Services, and The Order of St John.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Wellesley College (Margaret’s alma mater), San Francisco Conservancy of Music, and MIT Annual Fund. 

LOOKING FORWARD:  Expect the family to stick with their select interest areas. The couple’s daughter, a lawyer for the ACLU, is also a director of the foundation.
