Susan Wojcicki and Dennis Troper

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Youtube, Google; technology executive

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Jewish Causes, Bay Area Community

OVERVIEW: Susan Wojcicki and her husband Dennis Troper, both Giving Pledge Signatories, move philanthropy through the Troper Wojcicki Foundation, which gave away around $2.7 million in a recent year. Wojcicki and her sister Anne also support causes through the Anne Wojcicki Foundation. Interests include education and the Jewish community.

BACKGROUND: Born in Santa Clara, Calif., Susan Wojcicki is a daughter of Stanford physics professor Stanley Wojcicki and Esther Wojcicki, a teacher. She's the older sister of 23andMe Founder Anne Wojcicki. Susan graduated from Harvard with an A.B., received her M.S. in economics from University of California, Santa Cruz, and received her MBA from UCLA in 1998. She worked at Intel and Bain & Co. before joining Google as its 16th employee and first marketing manager. She advocated for Google's $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube in 2006, and has been CEO of YouTube since 2014.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Via the Troper Wojcicki Foundation, Susan supports her schools, Harvard and UCLA. The couple has recently supported Menlo School, Room to Read, which works to improve literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world, and Johns Hopkins University, where Wojcicki received an honorary degree. Via the Anne Wojcicki Foundation, the family has recently supported University of California, San Francisco. Anne and Susan's middle sister, Janet, an anthropologist and epidemiologist, is an associate professor at UCSF.

JEWISH CAUSES: Susan's maternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants who eventually settled in Southern California. Via their foundation, the couple has supported Oshman Family JCC, Gideon Housner Jewish Day School, and American Joint Jewish Committee.

BAY AREA COMMUNITY: Grantees include Computer History Museum.

LOOKING FORWARD: Anne and Susan, via the Anne Wojcicki Foundation, have directed large sums to a donor-advised fund at Schwab Charitable Fund, obscuring the full scope of the family's giving. Susan is only in her late 40s, and very much engaged in business, but perhaps the family will increase giving in coming years. Another interest that may emerge here is health, given Janet's background, as well as that of Anne and her former husband Sergey Brin, particularly with Parkinson's disease.
