NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Car Toys, Wireless Advocates

FUNDING AREAS: Human Services, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Daniel Brettler and his wife Cindy move their philanthropy through the Brettler Family Foundation, which focuses on helping others secure shelter, food and education. The foundation gave away around $1.1 million in a recent year.

BACKGROUND: Born and raised in New York, Daniel E. Brettler graduated from University of Vermont in 1981 and then moved to Seattle. He entered the mobile electronics business and founded Car Toys in 1987, which sells car stereos and phones and does auto detailing. He is also the chairman and CEO of Wireless Advocates, which operates the wireless kiosks in all 400+ Costco Wholesale warehouses in the United States.

ISSUES:

HUMAN SERVICES: The Brettlers are steady patrons of Plymouth Housing, which “works to eliminate homelessness and address its causes by preserving, developing and operating safe, quality, supportive housing and by providing adults experiencing homelessness with opportunities to stabilize and improve their lives.” One of the outfit’s sites is named A.L. Humphrey House, after Cindy’s later father. The Brettlers also steadily support United Way of King County, whose board Dan once chaired. Dan serves as co-chair for the Committee to End Homelessness in King County.

Other grantees have included Food Lifeline, King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, Mercy Housing, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Virginia Mason Foundation, and Solid Ground, a “Seattle-based nonprofit working to end poverty and undo racism and other oppressions that are root causes of poverty in our community.”

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Cindy is a volunteer for First Place School, Children’s Hospital and Bailey-Boushay House. The couple, via their foundation, have also supported places like Boys & Girls Club of King County, College Success Foundation, Scholarship Fund for Rainier Scholars, and Childhaven.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Brettlers to continue with their select interest areas.
