OVERVIEW: Signatories of the Giving Pledge, Rich Barton and his wife Sarah move their philanthropy through the Barton Family Foundation, which gave away a little under $250,000 in a recent year. Support goes to their alma maters and other educational organizations, particularly in the Seattle community. Other interests include health and the arts. 

BACKGROUND: Rich Barton graduated with a B.S. in general engineering from Stanford University. He founded Expedia at Microsoft in 1996 when he was 26, and served as president, CEO and board director until 2003. In 2007, he co-founded Glassdoor, a jobs and recruiting site, and currently serves as non-executive chairman. Barton is co-founder, executive chairman and CEO of Zillow Group. He is an active angel investor and a venture partner at Benchmark. 

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Grantees include Barton's alma mater Stanford and Sarah's undergraduate school, Williams. Other grantees include Duke University (Barton's father went there), University of Washington Foundation (Sarah did her residency at UW), Summer Search Seattle, Community for Youth, Lakeside School, Epiphany School, and Seattle United, the "advanced development club for Seattle Youth Soccer Association."

HEALTH: Sarah Barton is an obstetrician-gynecologist. Grantees include Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

ARTS AND CULTURE: Grantees include Northwest Film Forum, The International Documentary Association, and Henry Gallery Association.

OTHER: Grantees include Seattle Police Foundation and American Friends of Whistler, which works towards making Whistler, British Columbia "a better community by involving Americans in local philanthropy and community affairs."

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Bartons to continue to support these areas. Perhaps more money will move in coming years.
