Omar Hamoui: Tech Grants

OVERVIEW: Omar Hamoui and family move philanthropy through the Zakat Foundation, which supports the Muslim community. Southern and Northern California are regions of interests.   

BACKGROUND: Omar Hamoui graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in computer science and attended Wharton. He worked at Google as VP of mobile ads, responsible for the development and innovation of Google's mobile advertising products. He founded Churn Labs to incubate new startup teams and ideas. He also created AdMob. Hamoui is a partner at Sequoia Capital, where he partners with early stage companies.

ISSUES:

MUSLIM COMMUNITY: Hamoui and family, via their foundation, have directed seven-figure sums to New Horizon Irvine Education Foundation, which supports New Horizon, an independent Islamic school. Other grantees have included Muslim Advocates, and MPAC - Muslim Public Affairs Council.

EDUCATION: Hamoui supports the UCSF Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD:  Hamoui is still engaged in business, but expect him to continue to support his established interest areas. Perhaps more money will move through the foundation down the line.
