OVERVIEW: Philip and Rosa Friedman move their philanthropy through the Friedman Family Charitable Trust, which gave a little under $745,000 in a recent year. BACKGROUND: Philip Friedman was born and raised in the former Soviet Union. He graduated from Lviv Academy of Commerce and received an MBA from Uzgorod State University. After spending 12 years in numerous positions in the electronics industry, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. Friedman also studied information systems in the United States. In 1984, Friedman started Computer Generated Solutions (CGS), a diversified IT solutions and services company providing software, consulting, systems integration, training and help desk support.
ISSUES:
JEWISH CAUSES: Friedman served as the president of the American Committee of Shaare Zedek Hospital and is a member of the American Board and the International Board of Governors. He also serves on the board of Yeshiva University and is the current vice chairman of the university. The Friedmans support Yeshiva University and American Committee of Shaare Zadek. In 2009, he endowed the Alexander Friedman Scholarship Fund at Yeshiva University in honor of his father; it awards five needs-based scholarships each year, complete with offers of paid summer internships at CGS, and possible full-time employment once students graduate.
Other grantees include the American Society of Yad Vashem, East Hill Synagogue, Jewish Federation of Greater Metrowest New Jersey, Lincoln Square Synagogue, and the Netanya Foundation, whose mission is “the welfare as well as the educational, cultural, environmental, religious, charitable and health needs of the women, men and children and the disabled population living in Netanya.” The city of Netanya in Israel houses many immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia.
