OVERVIEW:  Fusen Chen and family do their grantmaking through the Chenwu Foundation. Funding through the foundation is modest, involving education, human services and religious causes.

 BACKGROUND: Fusen E. Chen graduated with a B.S in material science and engineering from the Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and received a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Fusen spent ten years at Applied Materials and was CTO at Novellus. He was president of Mattson Technology and is CEO of Kulicke & Soffa, a provider of semiconductor packaging and electronic assembly solutions.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Chen and family, via their foundation, support the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, the Dharma Realm Buddhist University, the University of Illinois and Shin Shin Educational Foundation, which provides “funding and services as well as construct or renovate primary schools in the remote, rural and despondent regions of China.”

RELIGIOUS: Grantees include Fa Yun Prajna Monastery and Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, which has received strong support recently.

GLOBAL: The Chens fund the global organizations Doctors Without Borders, World Vision, and the Friends of Hue Foundation, an NGO created in “response to the destruction caused by the 1999 Vietnamese floods.”

HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include Alameda County Community Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank. 

LOOKING FORWARD: Chen’s philanthropy has been modest lately, but he is very much still engaged in business. Perhaps more money will move through the foundation in the coming years.
