OVERVIEW: James Bochnowski and his family do their grantmaking through the Bochnowski Family Foundation, which gave away $6.5 million in a recent year. The family supports right-of-center policy organizations. Bochnowski serves on the board of overseers of the Hoover Institution.
BACKGROUND: James J. Bochnowski has a B.S. in aerospace engineering from MIT and an MBA from the Harvard School of Business. He was an army officer and a missile systems engineer at the United States Army Missile Intelligence Directorate. He co-founded Technology Ventures Investors and began investing in medical companies in 1981. He founded Delphi Ventures in 1988.
ISSUES:
POLICY & GLOBAL: Bochnowski’s grantmaking in the areas of policy development and global security tends to support organizations that maintain right-of-center views. Bochnowski sits on the board of the Hoover Institution, which receives regular support from his family foundation. Other past grantees include the Heritage Foundation, the Mercatus Center, George Mason University, Americans for Prosperity and the Goldwater Institute, which “advocates public policies with emphasis on empowering states to thwart overreach by the federal government.” The Bochnowski Family Foundation also supports the Grameen Foundation, which offers microfinance banking to entrepreneurs in developing countries.
VETERANS: Veterans causes represent a smaller area of grantmaking for the Bochnowski Foundation. Past grantees include Navy SEAL Foundation and Intrepid Museum Foundation.
BAY AREA COMMUNITY: The Bochnowski Family Foundation has given to some local organizations in the Bay Area including Habitat for Humanity of Greater San Francisco and the Salvation Army of the Golden State.
