Bruce and Kim Sachs

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Charles River Ventures

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW:  Bruce Sachs and his wife Kim move philanthropy through Water Cove Foundation, which gave away around $303,000 in a recent year. Grantmaking through the foundation strongly focuses on the Boston area.

BACKGROUND: Bruce I. Sachs graduated with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Bucknell University in 1980, his masters in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1981, and his MBA from Northeastern University in 1988. Sachs started his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories and then as a director of engineering at Memotec/Infinet. Sachs is currently general partner of Charles River Ventures, a leading investor in high-growth technology companies for almost half a century.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: The Sachses steadily support select health organizations, particularly in the Boston area. They’ve strongly supported Accelerated Cure Project for MS. The forces here are personal as his wife was diagnosed with the disease. Other grantees have included Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Alzheimer’s Association, American Diabetes Association, Foundation for Neurologic Diseases, Boston Medical Center, and Multiple Sclerosis Society.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Sachs supports his alma mater Bucknell University. The family have also supported places like Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula and Year Up.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family’s work in health, particularly MS research, to continue. Away from Boston, the Bay Area could serve as another site of more significant philanthropy.
