SOURCE OF WEALTH: Juniper Networks

FUNDING AREAS: Wellness

OVERVIEW: Scott and Joanie Kriens conduct grantmaking through the 1440 Foundation, which works to help people grow in relationship, spirit, and wellness. While the foundation still engages in grantmaking, the family prioritizes 1440 Multiversity, a new learning destination in the Silicon Valley area.

BACKGROUND: Scott Kriens graduated with a B.A. in economics from California State University, Hayward. He was vice president of sales and vice president of operations of StrataCom Inc., which he co-founded in 1986. He later joined Juniper Networks, where he's chairman of the board.

1440 FOUNDATION: Joan and Scott Kriens serve as president and vice president, respectively, of the 1440 Foundation, whose mission is to “serve champions committed to helping us grow in relationship, spirit, and wellness.” Investment partners have included Headspace, a meditation platform; Peer Health Exchange; and San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center.

The couple currently prioritizes 1440 Multiversity, a state-of-the-art immersive learning destination in Santa Cruz County, California. The institution runs programs ranging from professional development (teacher training, leadership, and mindfulness) to health and wellness (yoga, nutrition, and more).

LOOKING FORWARD: Kriens and Joan are laser-focused on 1440 Multiversity for now, and Kriens has said they have evolved from ‘hands-on giving’ to ‘removed giving.’
